Plate Compactor Rentals That Pack It Solid

Apex Equipment Rentals keeps vibratory plate compactors ready for contractors, landscapers, and homeowners across Idaho's Treasure Valley. A plate compactor settles gravel, sand, and granular fill into a tight, stable base — the foundation under every paver patio, concrete slab, and asphalt patch that holds up over time. Our Ammann plate runs a 19.7-inch plate at about 205 pounds, light enough to handle and maneuver yet heavy enough to pack a base in just a few passes. Pick up at our Nampa or Caldwell yard, or have it delivered to your job site in Boise, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Middleton, or Kuna.

What Treasure Valley Renters Use a Plate Compactor For

Plate compactor compacting a sand and gravel base before laying pavers

Pavers & Patios

Compact the gravel base and bedding sand before you set pavers, then lock the finished surface in place. The 19.7-inch plate fits walkways, patios, and borders, packing each layer flat and even so your hardscape doesn't settle or heave later.

Plate compactor packing a gravel subgrade before a concrete pour

Subgrade & Gravel Prep

Pack the sub-base before a concrete slab, shed pad, driveway, or footing. A properly compacted granular subgrade is what keeps concrete from cracking and settling. The Ammann's vibration drives down through gravel and road base in a few passes for a solid, load-ready foundation.

Plate compactor compacting an asphalt patch in a driveway

Asphalt Patching & Repair

Pothole, trench cut, or driveway patch — compact the hot or cold-mix asphalt so the repair bonds and lasts. The plate's flat face and steady vibration knit the patch into the surrounding surface for a smooth, durable finish on residential and light commercial jobs.

Plate Compactor Rental FAQs

How much does it cost to rent a plate compactor in Nampa or Boise?

Rates depend on the rental duration. Hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly rates are available, and you can see live pricing by selecting your dates in our online rental portal. Most base-prep and patio jobs fit inside a 4-hour or daily rental. For quotes or to confirm availability, call us at (208) 495-5858.

What is a plate compactor used for?

A vibratory plate compactor packs loose granular material — gravel, sand, road base, and asphalt — into a dense, stable layer. It's the tool for prepping a base under pavers, concrete slabs, sheds, and driveways, and for compacting asphalt patches. Anywhere you need a solid foundation that won't settle, you compact it first.

Should I rent a plate compactor or a jumping jack?

It comes down to the soil. A plate compactor is the right tool for granular materials — gravel, sand, road base — and for asphalt and wide, flat areas like patios and slab subgrades. A jumping jack (rammer) is built for cohesive soils like clay and for narrow, deep trenches. For the granular base prep most paver, slab, and driveway jobs need, the plate compactor is what you want. Not sure about your soil? Call us at (208) 495-5858.

How many passes does it take to compact a base?

For most granular base layers, two to four passes does it, depending on the material and how deep the lift is. Compact in thin layers — a few inches at a time — rather than one thick pile, and overlap each pass slightly. For deep fills, compact in stages as you build up. We'll walk you through it at pickup.

Will a plate compactor crack or scratch my pavers?

Running a bare plate directly on finished pavers can scuff or chip them. For the final pass over laid pavers, use a paver protection pad — a urethane mat that fits under the plate and cushions the surface while still transmitting the compaction force. Ask us about a pad when you reserve and we'll make sure you're set up.

How long can I rent a plate compactor?

We offer 4-hour, daily, weekly, and monthly rates, and compactors are available for both short jobs and extended projects. Longer rentals get better effective rates. If you're planning a project longer than a month, give us a call to discuss extended-rental pricing.

Do you deliver plate compactors?

Yes. We deliver across the Treasure Valley, including Nampa, Boise, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Middleton, and Kuna. Delivery fees depend on distance from our Nampa or Caldwell yard. At about 205 pounds, the plate is also small enough to transport yourself in a truck or trailer if you'd rather pick up at either yard.
